Spain Establishes Framework for Online Gambling
The Spanish Government’s recent announcement that it will allow online gambling operators to acquire Spanish online gambling licenses as from 1st January, 2012 has been met with delight from online casino operators who are now proceeding to apply for licenses. Online casino operators have, however, been cautioned by the Spanish online gambling trade association (AEDAPI) that it may be difficult to be profitable in Spain due to the high 25% taxation imposed on operators’ net income. AEDAPI has also warned that several forms of gambling are being temporarily excluded and that there is still quite a bit of work to be done and lots of ways to improve the gambling laws for the Spanish market. Rank plc is one of the first groups to announce that they are attempting to meet the January 1st deadline and intend launching its new Spanish online gambling site enRacha.com in 2012. Rank hopes to offer a huge range of Spanish online slots, card games, skill games and casino and poker games. United Kingdom betting company, Ladbrokes, has also announced its intention to enter the Spanish online gambling market and has entered into an agreement with leading online casino software provider Microgaming for its poker and online casino products. LBApuestas, Ladbbroke’s site for the Spanish market, is waiting to go live as soon as its license is received and will offer a wide range of online casino titles from Microgaming’s Flash and Download casino clients. Ladbrokes will also be leasing Microgaming’s online poker software and will thus be able to offer online gamblers in Spain a huge selection of poker cash games and tournaments.
